Pastor's Blog: The Floor Is Now Open for Nominations
|
Over the course of my pastoral ministry I’ve served on several occasions as Moderator of a gathered assembly. That service has ranged from moderating local church business meetings to denominational proceedings. In each meeting there has always been a moment in which some committee has brought forth recommendations for key leadership positions within the organization, but for which the bylaws have also called for others to bring forth their own nominations. So, before the vote, I always announced how “the floor is now open for nominations.” Most of the time there weren’t any nominations beyond what a committee was presenting, but at least folk had the chance to make them.
That’s something of where we are in our church with respect to the leadership positions necessary to carry on the work of our congregation. You may have seen the invitation that went out toward the end of August, inviting you to make nominations for the offices of Deacons, Associate Deacons, Committees, and Trustees. In a normal year most of the nominations come into the church office from those who have been in attendance on a Sunday morning. But this year is anything but normal, and I have been concerned that some may neither have gotten the information nor understood the process for returning their nominations. Because these positions are so vital to the life and mission of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, I wanted to make one last appeal for you to include yours.
While we’ve been running the link in our church newsletter since the last week of August, I didn’t want to assume that everyone has seen it. So, please take a moment to access the link below and offer your nominations. The Nominating Committee will be happy to hear from you and your response will make their work go so much more smoothly and effectively. Please remember that we will conclude the process at noon on Sunday, September 27. But until then, the floor will indeed be open and we desire to hear from you so that we might have a good group to select from as we fill these important positions at a time when such nominations are more critical than ever.
Brothers and sisters, choose…from among you (those) who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:3-4).
