Music Ministry

It is our prayer and desire to live out this Scripture in the worship life of our church.

Ephesians 5:19-20 encourages believers to, “Speak(ing) to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

We recognize that worship is not music alone, but musical offerings and congregational songs are important to our worship of the Lord.  Therefore, in our services we sing songs that fit the genres of Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  We teach our children to sing using their voices to give God praise.  We encourage our youth to find their voices and to sing to the Lord through our Chapel Choir for youth.  Our adults provide quality leadership in worship through our Sanctuary Choir.  We also help our 55+ adults to realize that their time for making music is not over through our Mellow Brook Singers choir.  Our stringed instrumentalists find ways to praise the Lord through using their talents in our band for our second service, as well as woodwind and brass instrumentalists in our first service.

Whatever we do musically, we strive to do it with excellence, offered to God as an act of worship.  What a privilege to serve the Lord in this way using our God-given talents for Him!  Take a moment to browse the page and find your place in the music ministry of our church.  We have space for you!

Musical Organizations

Sanctuary Choir

Dr. Kely Hatley, director

The Sanctuary Choir provides leadership and music for the 9 a.m. worship service each week. Membership is open to ages 18 and up. We sing a variety of literature ranging from spirituals, to hymn arrangements, to classical anthems. Our rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:15-8:45 p.m. in the Choir Suite. No audition is required, but some knowledge of music and its workings would be helpful to you.

You can listen to a few selections from our Sanctuary Choir by visiting this link.

Mellow Brook Singers

Dr. Kely Hatley, director

The Mellow Brook Singers is a choir for our adults age 55 and up. The primary ministry of this group is to learn music to take outside the walls of our church into our community by singing at nursing homes and assisted living centers. The choir does sing for our worship services twice a year (once in the fall and once in the spring). We take a spring trip as well, much like a small mini-choir tour. Membership is open to anyone above age 55 and no previous choral experience is required. We just enjoy singing about the Lord and sharing that joy with others. Rehearsals are from September through May each year on Thursdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Hudson Hall.

Chapel Choir

Dr. Kely Hatley, director

The Chapel Choir is comprised of youth in grades 7-12. The choir prepares music for worship, and the youth lead in our services about three times a semester. Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons from 5-6 p.m. and follow the school calendar year from September through May. We seek to take a week-long choir tour every other year.

MBBC Praise Band

Micaiah Bolton, leader

Our praise band is responsible for the congregational music at our 11:00 Contemporary Worship Service. The present instrumentation used at this service is acoustic guitar, electric lead, bass, keyboard, and drums. If you have experience playing one or more of these instruments and would like more information about the group, please contact Micaiah Bolton, our Associate Minister of Music, and she will be in touch with you.

Handbell Choir

Dr. Kely Hatley, director

Our church has five octaves of Schulmerich Handbells. Our Handbell Choir meets for specific time periods to prepare to ring for worship and other occasions. If you have previous experience with handbells and would like to be a part of this group, then please contact Dr. Hatley in the music office. If you would like to learn how to ring handbells, music reading skills are not entirely necessary, but a good sense of rhythm and recognition of notes is definitely needed.

MBBC Orchestra

Dr. Kely Hatley, director

During the summer months, when the children’s choirs do not meet, our orchestra gathers weekly during that Wednesday night time frame of 6-7 p.m. in the Sanctuary to prepare pieces to play in August. If you would like to dust off your instrument and join us for the summer orchestra, please contact Kely to let him know.  It’s very rewarding to play for the Lord.

You can listen to the our orchestra via our archived services from this link:

Children's Choir Organizations

Wednesdays from 6:15-7 p.m. (these choirs meet during the academic calendar year)

PRESCHOOL CHOIRS 3'S: ROOM 234

Jo Wills, Director

Brennan Dow, Caroline Hatley, and Lucy Spann, adult leaders

Our preschool choir for children three years old meets in room 234 on the second floor. Children are introduced to motions and movement with music and they are encouraged to find their singing voice. Many are shy and this is a good way to help them gain confidence in singing together.

CHERUB CHOIR (PRESCHOOL 4'S AND 5'S): ROOM 232

Sara Burks and Amy Harwell, Co-Directors

Hayden Costa and Emily Megginson, adult leaders

Using differing instrumentation, Sara and Amy capitalize on the work started in the three-year-old choir. Steady beat is emphasized as well as having a good time while learning the music. The ladies work hard to give the kids a stress-free environment with a lot of smiles and good encouragement.

MUSIC MAKERS (GRADES 1-3): ROOM 259

Lassie Hatley, Director

Kacie Bell and Hannah Grace Hatley, adult leaders

Christopher Henley, accompanist

With the children entering grade school, the music level is raised and children are encouraged to hold music in their hands and to follow along with the words. Elementary music instruction skills are pointed out and taught while music learning is taught in a fun way. This choir sings periodically throughout the school year as it has pieces ready for worship leadership.

YOUNG MUSICIANS (GRADES 4-6): ROOM 247

Sarah Rich, Director

Ben Ellis and Ethan McVay, adult leaders

Cathy Spence, accompanist

The Young Musicians are working hard as their abilities have escalated in regards to their musical skills. This choir will sing several times each semester giving the children ample time to lead in a worship service. It models how to present music to the Lord in worship. A variety of musical styles is used by this group.
