Luke 14:33 • “Kiss It Goodbye”

Sacrifice is a word that has attained taboo status today. No one relishes the idea of giving up anything. All around us are voices telling us that to be happy and whole we have to be adding stuff on a continual basis. Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try to fill the holes in our souls with things we find such consumption to be an exercise in futility.

Perhaps the better way is to think about the holiness of subtraction and how the path of surrender provides more than we ever thought possible. So spoke Jesus to the large numbers that accompanied him into Jerusalem only to abandon him when the cross became his apparent outcome. Jesus always knew that while many would show interest, few would possess the depth of commitment required to be his disciple.

How, then, do we measure up on that scale? Is our faith something that reflects our readiness to give up everything for Jesus, or is it instead window dressing for another way to satisfy our deepest desires? How we answer such a question matters a lot; it actually matters for eternity.

This Sunday is the last Sunday before Palm Sunday. During this most recent series we have looked at what Jesus said he expects from those who would follow him all the way to the cross, and beyond. Sunday’s message will emphasize the importance of sacrifice and how such dedication reflects our deepest priorities.

Join us as we gather to ponder the possibilities of what might come from taking Jesus at his word, which challenges us to make his cause the ultimate consideration in life.  What we will discover is that making the necessary sacrifices will put us in a positon where will have room in our lives for what really matters – the things of God that alone are ultimate and eternal. And there’s certainly nothing taboo about that.
