Pastor's Blog: "Gather and Go"
| | Dr. Wayne Splawn
Last night I attended the Mellow Brook Singers concert. I left the concert so encouraged by the experience. Yes, the music was wonderful and there was a sweet spirit in the Sanctuary. But the main reason I left encouraged was the concert reminded me that people from every age group in our church embrace the call to be on mission with God in the world. The choir presented a concert they have taken on the road to many assisted living facilities in the greater Birmingham area. The goal of their outings is to bring joy and the presence of Christ to residents who are largely isolated from the rest of society due to physical limitations.
This Sunday we will pray for MBBC mission teams that will go out this summer to partner with churches and missionaries who are seeking to faithfully fulfill the Great Commission that Jesus gave to his disciples. The Builders for Christ Team will head to Ohio, the Student Ministry Team will travel to the Dominican Republic, and our Family Mission Team will be in Daleville, Alabama. No matter the location or the age or stage of life of those participating in the trips, they will each be united by their common desire to go out into the world to make the gospel of Jesus Christ known in word and deed.
I pray this missional impulse will always be a hallmark of Mountain Brook Baptist Church. Gathering for worship, Bible study, and fellowship are important aspects of our church. But we must always remember that we gather to be prepared to go into the world so that others might experience the abundant life we have found through faith in Jesus Christ. Whether you are going on one of these trips or will spend most of your summer in Birmingham, I encourage you to ask the Lord to show you how he is calling you to join him in his mission to make Jesus known in the world.
