Pastor's Blog: "Deacon Ordination Sunday"

 |   |  Dr. Wayne Splawn

This Sunday is an important day in the life of our church. We will gather in the Sanctuary at 10 a.m. for a combined worship service at which we will ordain new Deacons, install Deacons who will serve our church in 2022, and honor Life Deacons who have served our church faithfully for many years. We will also recognize the contributions of Deacons who completed a three-year term of service in 2021. As we prepare to recognize these servant leaders in our church, I think it is helpful to remember the qualifications and responsibilities of Deacons as outlined in our Church Bylaws. Our Bylaws state:

“In accordance with the meaning of the word and the practice of the New Testament, Deacons are ordained servants of the church. They are members of the church whose character and qualifications shall be those set forth in Scripture. Deacons shall be responsible for promoting peace, harmony, and a spirit of cooperation among the membership. They shall serve as a council of advice and conference with the Senior Minister in all matters pertaining to the welfare and plans for the church. They shall be responsible for formulating, promoting, and operating the financial program of the church, including appointment of a Finance Committee. They shall apportion the membership of the church among themselves and shall exercise oversight of the spiritual and personal welfare of the members, seeking to enlist them in activities of the church.”

As you can see from this description of the qualifications and responsibilities for Deacons at Mountain Brook Baptist Church, our Deacons play vital roles in helping us become a more unified, effective, and faithful congregation. In addition to praying for our Deacons, we will also hear the testimonies of the Deacons who are being ordained. This part of our Deacon Ordination Service is always a source of encouragement to me as I listen to the ways God is at work in the lives of people in our church.

Please plan to attend this special service on Sunday and make note of the combined worship schedule. We will have Sunday Morning Bible Study at 9 a.m. and the combined worship service at 10 a.m.
