Meet Our New Members: Mary Helen & Joe Dixon

Have you met Mary Helen and Joe Dixon? They joined our church on January 25. We hope you'll get to know them a little better through this latest "Meet Our New Member" blog, and that you'll have the chance to connect with them one Sunday in worship.
Tell us about your family. Joe and Mary Helen have a daughter, Margaret, near Syracuse, NY. Her husband is Andy, and her daughter Anna will go to college this fall. Our son Joe, his wife Janelle, and their kids Sophie Claire, Jack, and Lucy have enjoyed Mountain Brook Baptist.
Where did you work? Mary Helen: I taught history for 14 years. I worked as a Development Specialist for National WMU for 12 years. I am now retired, and Joe is retired as well.
What led you to Mountain Brook Baptist Church? Joe's sister Mary Sale Calhoun and her family have been at Mountain Brook Baptist for 50 years. We wanted to support our son and his family. On several occasions, we met Dr. Splawn. He was so gracious and interested in us.
What is your favorite Bible verse? Mary Helen: John 10:10 I have come that you might have life abundant. Joe: Philippians 4 6-7
What are some of your hobbies and interests? Mary Helen: I enjoy gardening and watching grandchildren in sports. Joe: I enjoy HO model Railroading and building furniture. I built a street roadster from scratch.
What is a fun fact other people may not know about you? Mary Helen: My sister, Sarah Shelton, was the pastor of Baptist Church of the Covenant for 18 years. Joe: I went down the Colorado River on a raft twice.
