Pastor's Blog: The Break That Makes Us Whole

 |

This next week will see many of our folk away for the Spring Break. I understand how important it is to take time off from the pressures and demands that families juggle on a regular basis, which a week at this time of the year affords. Hopefully, everyone who gets away will return to their responsibilities refreshed and renewed.

But what if you don’t have the opportunity to break away? What do you do then? Perhaps an alternative is to consider your involvement in our Holy Week activities, which will begin this Palm Sunday and last through next Sunday’s Easter celebration.

This week’s Holy Week will feature Dr. Douglas Walker, who serves as the Vice-President for University Advancement at Trinity Evangelical University near Chicago. As with recent Holy Week Speakers, Doug grew up in our church and answered the call to ministry while a member at MBBC. Doug’s ministry has taken him from the local church pastorate to seminary administration to his present position as a development officer. Doug’s parents, Scooter and Joyce, were long-time members as well and active in so many leadership positions. It will be a delight to have Doug back with us, leading us in such an important capacity. He will be with us on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holy Week, delivering the noon messages each of those days. I encourage you to be present at each of these services to support Doug and to invite others to join you.

In addition to those services, our choir will lead our Maundy Thursday service, where we will be observing the Lord’s Supper. Then, of course, will come Good Friday and two glorious services on Easter Sunday.

I look forward to seeing you at each of these special services, confident that what we experience will offer just the “break” each of us needs – one that lasts for more than the week that it entails but offers the promise of renewal that will never ebb or wane.

"The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.  Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest’” (Mark 6:30-31).
